A Reference Amplifier with Legendary DNA
If you follow high-end audio, you’ve probably heard of the Parasound Halo JC 1. The Halo JC 5 is Parasound’s answer to a question their customers kept asking: could all that JC 1 performance be packed into a single stereo chassis for less money and less space? The answer is yes. The JC 5 takes the core circuit design, topology, and component philosophy of two JC 1 monoblocks and combines them into one 73-pound amplifier — at roughly two-thirds the price of a pair of JC 1s.
A power amplifier is the component in your system responsible for taking the small audio signal from your preamp and amplifying it with enough force to drive your speakers. The JC 5 does this with 400 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 600 watts into 4 ohms, and a staggering 1,200 watts in bridged mono mode. It delivers 90 amps of peak current per channel and remains stable with speaker impedance dips down to 1.5 ohms. In practical terms, this means the JC 5 can drive virtually any loudspeaker ever made, including the most demanding, current-hungry designs, without breaking a sweat.
What Makes the JC 5 Sound So Good?
The JC 5 operates in pure Class A for its first 12 watts per channel. Class A is widely regarded as the purest-sounding amplifier topology, but it generates considerable heat and is inefficient at higher power levels. For most people, 12 watts covers the majority of their actual listening volume — so for most of the time you’re listening, the JC 5 is running in its sweetest, most refined operating mode. When the music demands more power, the amp smoothly transitions into Class AB, extending effortlessly to its full 400-watt rating.
The signal path is direct-coupled, meaning there are no capacitors or inductors between the input and your speakers that could add coloration or limit bass response. The result is bass extension all the way down to 5 Hz — that’s well below what most subwoofers can reproduce. The circuit uses the same topology as the JC 1: JFET input transistors (ultra-low-noise Toshiba parts that Parasound has stockpiled, as Toshiba no longer manufactures them), MOSFET driver transistors, and 24 beta-matched Sanken bipolar output transistors that switch at 60 MHz — fast enough to track even the most complex musical transients without distortion.
The dual-mono design goes all the way from the transformer windings to the speaker terminals. Each channel has its own independent power supply for its input, driver, and output stages. The massive 1.7 kVA toroidal transformer uses independent windings per channel, and the total filter capacitance is enormous: 8,880 µF of Nichicon Gold Tune caps for the input stages, plus 132,000 µF of Rubycon caps for the output stages. The input stage rails run 10 volts above the output stage rails — an engineering detail borrowed directly from the JC 1 that prevents voltage sag under heavy loads, keeping distortion vanishingly low even during demanding passages.

What speakers does the JC 5 work well with?
Essentially any speaker on the market. Reviewers have tested the JC 5 with a wide range, from efficient DeVore Fidelity O/93 monitors (93 dB sensitivity) to demanding MartinLogan electrostatic hybrids to 4-ohm, low-sensitivity tower speakers. The 90 amps of peak current and stability down to 1.5 ohms means the JC 5 can handle speakers that would cause lesser amplifiers to shut down or distort.
What do the gain control knobs on the rear panel do?
Each channel has an adjustable gain control with a 29 dB range. This lets you fine-tune how much the JC 5 amplifies the signal from your preamp.
