The Middle Child of the Anniversary Range

Advance Paris built the APEX range to mark thirty years, and the A10 APEX sits in the middle of it. It carries the same limited black finish and white VU meters as its bigger brother, in a noticeably smaller box.

The design is a tube hybrid. Two ECC81/12AT7 tubes run the preamplifier stage behind the front window, feeding a solid-state output section. A single 380VA toroidal transformer supplies it. Power comes in at 130 watts per channel into 8 ohms, or 198 watts into 4 ohms.

Enough Inputs for a Real Rack

Digital sources get three optical inputs, one coaxial, a USB audio port, and HDMI eARC for your television. Analog gets five RCA line inputs and one balanced XLR pair. A moving-magnet phono input sits alongside them with its own ground post and adjustable capacitance.

On the output side there is an RCA pre-out, a record out, and two subwoofer outs. Speakers connect to two sets of terminals for zones A and B. A 6.35mm headphone jack sits on the front. The chassis weighs 28.4 pounds and is 16.9 inches wide.

Where the APEX Money Goes

Conversion runs through an ESS9018. Over USB it accepts PCM to 24-bit/192kHz plus DSD64 and DSD128. The optical and coaxial inputs each handle PCM to 24-bit/192kHz, and the HDMI eARC port carries stereo PCM from a television.

The measured numbers are quiet for the class. Signal-to-noise sits at 106 dB and distortion at 0.045%, both taken at 90 watts into 8 ohms. Frequency response runs 20Hz to 80kHz, measured at 31 watts.

One Switch Buys You More Class A

A High-Bias switch on the back doubles the Class A bias, holding the amplifier in Class A further up the volume range. That is where a lot of ordinary listening happens. The trade is heat and power consumption, so leave it off if the amp lives in a cabinet.

Bluetooth is not built in. Advance Paris sells an optional A-BTC module that adds aptX AD, and it fits the same socket used across the range. There is no network streaming on board at all.
