A Tube Preamp Stage With a Receiver's Connection Count
The A10 Classic runs your music through a pair of ECC81/12AT7 twin triodes before it reaches a Class AB push-pull output stage rated at 130 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Two backlit VU meters track what each channel is actually doing.
What sets it apart is everything behind it. Six analog RCA inputs, one of them a moving-magnet phono stage with switchable loading. A balanced XLR line input. Three optical inputs, one coaxial, and a USB audio input. Two HDMI sockets, one of them ARC for a television.
That list belongs on an AV receiver, not on a tube-hybrid integrated amplifier. Advance Paris built it around a 15cm toroidal transformer, four 6800µF filter capacitors, and separate cooling and output transistors for the left and right channels.
What the High Bias Switch Actually Changes
A switch on the rear panel labeled High Bias holds the output stage in Class A bias for the first watts of its range — where most listening actually happens. A front-panel LED confirms it.
The trade is heat. Advance Paris asks for roughly 5cm of clear space at the sides and 10cm above, and the manual is blunt that the ventilation slots must stay unobstructed. Leave it switched off and the amplifier runs cooler and more efficiently.
What the Digital Section Accepts
Conversion runs through an ESS9018 DAC with an AK4118 transceiver handling incoming PCM. The three optical inputs accept 24-bit 96kHz and the coaxial input 24-bit 192kHz — the usual ceilings for those connections.
USB audio goes considerably further: 24- and 32-bit PCM from 44.1kHz to 384kHz, plus DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 over DoP. A separate USB-A socket plays MP3 files from a memory stick, and firmware updates arrive the same way on a FAT32 key.
On the bench the A10 Classic measures 20Hz to 80kHz within 3dB, with distortion below 0.006% at 1kHz into 1 watt and below 0.02% at 32 watts. Signal-to-noise is 98dB and output impedance 10 kilohms. Power rises to 190 watts into 4 ohms.
Two Speaker Pairs, and the Impedance They Need
Terminals A and B each drive a pair, selectable as A, B, or both. Used one pair at a time, the A10 Classic handles 4 to 16 ohms. Running both pairs together raises the floor to 8 ohms, so check your speakers before you press A+B.
Two subwoofer outputs feed one or two active subs. A Pre Out and In Amp pair, bridged from the factory, lets you split the preamp from the power stage — remove the jumper and either half works on its own.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Ian White gave the A10 Classic an Editor's Choice award at ecoustics in July 2026, finding that "the tubes add enough texture, body, and tonal color to keep instruments and voices from becoming sterile."
Steve Huff of HiFi Huff heard the A10 alongside its bigger sibling in October 2024, and found "the A10 was rocking with its own effortless flow" — "highly competitive with other pieces in this price bracket."
Ed Selley scored it 9 out of 10 at AVForums in October 2024, calling the A10 Classic "a formidable integrated amp and sensational value for money." Its connectivity "makes pretty much everything else at the price feel woefully underequipped".
White's review names the real limits. His cons list runs "No moving-coil phono support", "No built-in network streaming, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet", "Bluetooth requires an optional module", "HDMI ARC rather than eARC", and "Limited subwoofer management with no adjustable crossover or high-pass filtering".
Who Is This Integrated Amplifier Best For?
- You have more sources than inputs — six RCA inputs, a balanced XLR, four digital inputs and two HDMI sockets end that problem for good.
- Your television is part of the system — the HDMI ARC input takes the TV's audio directly, with CEC available in the setup menu.
- You want tube character without a tube power amp — the triodes sit in the preamp stage, so you get 130 watts and no output-tube bias to manage.
- You play moving-magnet vinyl — the built-in phono stage switches between 100, 200 and 320pF to suit your cartridge.
- If you stream, plan for a source — there is no network player and no Bluetooth without an add-on. Advance Paris covers both: the WTX-StreamTubes Wi-Fi streamer, or the X-FTB02 aptX HD receiver that plugs straight into the amplifier's own Bluetooth port.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Speakers go to the A terminals, a second pair to B. A turntable goes to phono with its ground lead on the post beside it; CD players, tuners and anything else line-level fill the remaining RCA inputs, and a balanced source takes the XLR.
A television connects over HDMI ARC. Disc players and set-top boxes can use the second HDMI socket, or optical and coaxial. A computer goes to USB audio, and headphones to the 6.35mm jack on the front.
Trigger in and out on minijacks switch the A10 Classic on and off with the rest of your rack. Auto standby can be set from 5 to 90 minutes, or switched off entirely if you would rather it stayed awake.
Pairs Well With
Building around the A10 Classic? Here are some good companions:
- Speakers: 130 watts will drive a demanding floorstander — see our Floorstanding Speakers.
- Turntable: The phono stage is already fitted — see our Turntables.
- Subwoofer: Two outputs mean you can run a stereo pair — see our Subwoofers.
- Speaker cable: The binding posts take spades, pins, banana plugs or bare wire — see our Speaker Cables.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much power does the A10 Classic deliver?
130 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 190 watts into 4 ohms, from a Class AB push-pull output stage. Into 2.66 ohms it will deliver 250 watts.
Can I connect a turntable directly?
Yes, if your cartridge is moving magnet. The phono input offers 100, 200 or 320pF of capacitance and has its own ground post. Moving-coil cartridges need an outboard step-up or phono stage.
Which input should I use for hi-res files?
USB audio. It takes 24- and 32-bit PCM up to 384kHz plus DSD256 over DoP. Coaxial stops at 192kHz and the optical inputs at 96kHz.
Does Bluetooth come built in?
There is a dedicated port for Advance Paris's own receiver — the X-FTB01 for aptX or the X-FTB02 for aptX HD. Both are plug-and-play; neither is included.
Can it drive two pairs of speakers?
Yes. A front-panel selector steps through A, B and A+B. One pair at a time can be 4 to 16 ohms; with both pairs playing, each must be 8 ohms or higher.
How is this different from the A12 Classic?
The A12 Classic is the larger and more powerful model above this one. Steve Huff, who heard both, described the A12 as the more refined of the two.
