MoFi Archival Outer Sleeves — 4 Mil, for the Jacket Rather Than the Record

Outer sleeves for LP jackets, sold in a pack of 50. They go over the cover, not around the record, and their job is the artwork: guarding against scuffs, wear, denting, dirt and general shelf damage.

Jacket condition is most of a record's value and all of its presence on a shelf. A record can be cleaned; a ring-worn, scuffed or dented cover cannot be put back the way it was.

Construction

Why 4 Mil Matters

MoFi specifies a 4 mil thickness. That is substantial enough for genuine archival protection — it resists denting and scuffing rather than simply covering them — while staying easy to slide in and out on a packed shelf.

Thinner sleeves are cheaper and they crease. A sleeve that has folded over on itself in the rack is doing nothing for the jacket inside it, and is usually harder to get the record back into than it was to get it out.

Sizing

They are sized just large enough for a close fit while leaving room for most gatefold jackets. A gatefold is appreciably thicker than a single sleeve, and an outer sleeve cut only for single jackets is no use across half a collection.

How Do You Use Them?

Slide the jacket in with the record removed, which is easier and puts less strain on the sleeve than forcing a loaded jacket through the opening. Then put the record back, and store the whole thing upright rather than stacked flat.

Fifty to a pack. Unlike inner sleeves, these usually get bought for the records worth protecting rather than for everything on the shelf — so count the pressings you would be unhappy to see damaged and start there.
