MoFi Original Master Inner Sleeves — The Ones MoFi Uses on Its Own Pressings
Inner sleeves for LPs, sold in a pack of 50. These are the same sleeves Mobile Fidelity puts around its own Original Master Recording releases, which is about as direct an endorsement as a packaging product gets.
The sleeve that came with your record is usually the problem rather than the protection. Plain paper sheds fibers and scuffs a surface every time the record goes in or comes out, and it does that for decades without anyone noticing.
Construction
Three Plies, Not One
MoFi describes them as imported, three-ply, anti-static premium sleeves, similar to rice paper. The construction is a paper layer sandwiched between two sheets of high-density polyethylene, with a translucent HDPE front.
The point of that sandwich is that no paper touches the record. The paper gives the sleeve body and stiffness; the HDPE faces are what the vinyl actually slides against, and polyethylene does not shed the way paper does.
Anti-Static
Static is what makes a record attract dust in the first place, and pulling an LP out of a plain paper sleeve generates plenty of it. An anti-static sleeve reduces the charge at the exact moment the record is most exposed.
Who Are These Sleeves Best For?
- Your records are in their factory paper sleeves — that is what most collections need replacing first
- You have just cleaned a batch — putting a clean record back in a dirty sleeve undoes the work
- You want what MoFi uses — these are the sleeves on their own Original Master Recording pressings
- You buy used vinyl — a second-hand record's sleeve has usually had a harder life than the record
- You want to protect the jacket rather than the disc — that is an outer sleeve; see Archival Record Outer Sleeves
How Do You Use Them?
Slide the record out of its factory sleeve by the edges, put the old sleeve aside, and slip the disc into the new one. If you are re-sleeving after cleaning, let the record dry fully first — a damp record in a new sleeve defeats the exercise entirely.
They come 50 to a pack, so count the records you intend to re-sleeve rather than the records you own. Most people do it in waves — a shelf at a time, or a cleaning batch at a time — and 50 covers a decent session either way.
Pairs Well With
What most owners buy alongside inner sleeves.
- Archival Record Outer Sleeves — the jacket half of the same job
- Record cleaning solutions — the fluid the machine is there to remove
- Record brushes — for the dust that never needs a machine
- Record cleaning machines — if you are still choosing one
Frequently Asked Questions
How many are in a pack?
Fifty. Count the records you plan to re-sleeve in one go rather than the whole collection.
What are they made of?
A paper layer between two sheets of high-density polyethylene, with a translucent HDPE front. MoFi describes the result as three-ply and similar to rice paper.
Will they fit in the original jacket?
They are made for standard 12-inch LP jackets. A very tightly packed jacket, or one holding a heavy pressing, can be a snug fit — as it would be with any upgrade sleeve.
Do they help with static?
They are anti-static, which matters most at the moment you slide the record out — that is when a plain paper sleeve generates the charge that attracts dust.
Do I need outer sleeves too?
They protect different things. These guard the record; an outer sleeve guards the jacket and its artwork. Most people who care about one eventually want the other.
