Andrew Jones's Point-Source Speaker, in a Size for Real Rooms

The SourcePoint 8 is the smaller of Andrew Jones's two concentric standmounts for MoFi Electronics. An 8-inch woofer carries a 1.25-inch soft dome tweeter at its center, so both drivers launch sound from one point. The cabinet is 18 inches tall, and the speakers are sold as a pair, with or without MoFi's matching stands.

Jones designed concentric drivers at KEF, Pioneer, TAD and ELAC before MoFi. His idea here is a two-way with a woofer large enough to reach the bass. The tweeter never has to strain, and the crossover can sit low, at 1.6 kHz. The woofer cone doubles as a waveguide for the tweeter.

Why One Point Matters

When treble and midrange come from the same spot, the sound stays the same as you move around the room. The stereo image holds together. MoFi's Twin-Drive motor uses two neodymium magnets for a symmetrical field, which the company says cuts intermodulation distortion. A faceted baffle reduces diffraction.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

MoFi quotes 47 Hz to 30 kHz, 87 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms nominal with a 6.4 ohm minimum. The minimum recommended power is 30 watts. The maximum input is 150 watts. Stereophile measured the sensitivity as specified and called it an easy load, so tube amplifiers are a real option.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 11.4 inches wide, 18 tall and 12.6 deep without the grille, and weighs 27.9 pounds. Finishes are satin walnut or satin black ash real-wood veneer, or painted satin white. Magnetic grilles are included, and a single pair of 5-way binding posts sits on the back. The warranty is five years.

Stereophile lists the SourcePoint 8 in Class B of its Recommended Components, 2025 and 2026 editions. The entry cites Kalman Rubinson's review: "they generate a fairly wide and deep soundstage that is notably transparent and detailed."

Neil Gader of The Absolute Sound gave it a 2024 Golden Ear Award: "Bass response is forceful, controlled, and accurate in pitch." He added: "I called it the most satisfying compact I'd heard all year. I still do."

Dave Berriman reviewed it for The Ear on February 13, 2024, finding "an uncanny ability to set up precise stereo images within an almost holographic soundstage." Stereophile noted little output below 50 Hz, but "tight, powerful bass" above it.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power. Any integrated or tube amplifier of 30 watts or more will drive them well.

Put them on stands with the driver near ear height, a foot or more from the wall behind the rear port. Stereophile found the clearest center image with the speakers toed in about halfway between straight ahead and aimed at the seat.
