The Standmount That Thinks It Is a Floorstander
Monitor Audio changed the Silver 100 more than any other model in the eighth generation. The 7G was a two-way with one driver covering everything up to 2.3 kHz, while the 8G is a true three-way.
Inside sits an 8-inch C-CAM bass driver, a dedicated 3-inch C-CAM midrange driver in its own enclosure, and a 25mm C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter, with crossover points at 610 Hz and 2.9 kHz. The bass driver now handles only bass, which is the point of the redesign.
The numbers read like a floorstander’s: 33 Hz to 35 kHz in-room at minus 6 dB, a port tuned to 37 Hz, and peaks reaching 114 dB. The cabinet measures 440 by 230 by 354 millimetres and weighs 12.1 kg each, so this is not a speaker that hides on a shelf.
Eighth-Generation Engineering, Driver by Driver
The bass and midrange cones use RST III geometry, Monitor Audio’s third-generation hexagonal surface pattern, with dimples that start small at the centre and grow toward the edge. That keeps the cone rigid so it moves as a piston instead of flexing. Both also gained a new progressive spider, reprofiled surrounds, and upgraded voice coils.
The Gold Dome tweeter has been part of Monitor Audio speakers since 1982, and this generation adds a shorting ring and a new neodymium magnet. It sits in the Uniform Dispersion Waveguide II, now shared with the midrange driver, spreading treble evenly rather than at one chair.
The rear port has a new shape: Monitor Audio studied the interlocking wing feathers that let owls fly silently, then dimpled both ends of a wider port to smooth airflow. Less turbulence means cleaner bass.
All three drivers use Through-Bolt Technology: a bolt runs from the rear panel to the back of each driver, bracing it as it moves and stiffening the whole cabinet at once.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Tim Hancock reviewed the Silver 100 8G for AVForums on August 17, 2026, scoring it 9 out of 10 with a Highly Recommended award. He praised "a tremendous attention-grabbing quality, full of life and excitement," and singled out the midrange for having room to breathe.
He was equally direct about the demands: these are physically large speakers that need substantial stands and a genuinely powerful amplifier. Hancock found the balance leaning cool, advised against bright electronics, and noted the soundstage does not spread especially wide.
Who Are These Standmount Speakers Best For?
- Listeners who want three-way sound without towers — A dedicated midrange driver is rare in a standmount at any price.
- Owners of medium and larger rooms — A 37 Hz port and an 8-inch driver need space to work.
- People with a capable amplifier — Impedance dips to 3.7 ohms, and this speaker rewards real power.
- Anyone building toward home theater — A matching centre, on-wall, and Atmos model finish the system.
- Shoppers who took the name literally — At 17 inches tall and 26 pounds each, these will not sit on a bookshelf, and they need heavy stands with a large top plate. For the Silver 8G sound in a truly compact cabinet, look at the Silver 50 8G in Bookshelf Speakers.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run speaker cable from your amplifier to the binding posts on the back, red to red and black to black. Given the 3.7-ohm dip and the cooler balance, choose an amplifier with power and a slightly warm character rather than a bright one.
Stands are not optional here: pick a pair rated for the weight with a top plate wide enough for the cabinet, get the tweeter near ear height, and pull the speakers off the rear wall. Foam port bungs come in the box if the bass runs heavy.
Pairs Well With
A few good places to look next:
- Speaker Stands — Essential, and they need to be substantial.
- Integrated Amplifiers — Bring real current, not just a matching wattage number.
- Speaker Cables — A clean, low-loss run between amp and speaker.
- Subwoofers — Optional here, but handy for movies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will these fit on a bookshelf?
Realistically, no, because at 440mm tall and 230mm wide the Silver 100 8G needs proper stands with a large top plate.
How much amplifier power do these need?
Monitor Audio recommends 50 to 200 watts into 8 ohms, or 100 to 400 watts into 4 ohms, with 200 watts of continuous handling.
How is this different from the Silver 100 7G?
The 7G was a two-way, while the 8G adds a dedicated 3-inch midrange driver, moves to a three-way crossover, and grows in every dimension.
How low does the bass go?
Monitor Audio specifies 33 Hz in-room at minus 6 dB with the port tuned to 37 Hz, which is floorstander territory.
What warranty does Monitor Audio offer?
Monitor Audio lists a five-year warranty on its United States product page.

- True 3-Way Standmount Design: Separate bass, midrange, and treble drivers let each part of the music work in its ideal range for clear, balanced sound.
- 8-Inch C-CAM Bass Driver: The large Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium woofer delivers the scale, impact, and low-frequency reach often associated with a floorstanding speaker.
- Dedicated 3-Inch C-CAM Midrange Driver: A separate midrange driver gives voices and instruments more room to breathe while freeing the large woofer to focus on bass.
- RST III Cone Geometry: Monitor Audio's latest Rigid Surface Technology strengthens the bass and midrange cones and helps limit unwanted resonance.
- 25mm C-CAM Gold Dome Tweeter: The redesigned tweeter uses a vented rear chamber, a shorting ring, and a UD Waveguide II to lower distortion and spread clear high frequencies across the listening area.
- Refined Crossover: Updated crossover components help the three drivers blend smoothly for a coherent presentation from deep bass through high treble.
- Silent Flow Port Technology: An enlarged, flared bass-reflex port improves airflow and helps reduce port noise for cleaner, better-controlled bass.
- Through-Bolt Driver Bracing: The drive units are braced through the cabinet to improve rigidity and reduce unwanted vibration.
- Bi-Wire and Bi-Amp Capability: Dual terminal pairs allow standard single-wiring, bi-wiring, or bi-amping; the terminals also accept banana plugs.
