A Simple, Compact Phono Stage from NAD
The NAD PP 2e is a phono preamplifier that switches between moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. It's the current version in NAD's PP 2 line, following the earlier PP 2i.
A single switch on the back flips between MM and MC modes, so there's no complicated setup involved. This is a purely analog design, with RCA connections only and no USB or digital output.
Gold-plated input sockets help maintain a clean connection over time. An Auto Power Down feature saves standby power when the preamp isn't in use.
Built for Two Cartridge Types
Moving magnet gain is set at 35dB, with 47 kOhm input impedance and 200pF capacitance. Moving coil gain is set at 60dB, with 100 ohm input impedance and 180pF capacitance.
RIAA accuracy is rated at ±0.3dB. Signal-to-noise ratio reaches 80dB on moving magnet and 78dB on moving coil, both A-weighted. THD stays under 0.03% across 20Hz to 20kHz.
Maximum output level reaches 5.3V, with output impedance at 100 ohms. It runs from an external 23.5V DC power supply, included in the box.
It measures 135 by 49 by 72mm, small enough to tuck behind a turntable or amplifier without taking up much space.
Who Is This Preamp Best For?
- Anyone who owns both MM and MC cartridges. A single switch moves between the two, without separate boxes or complicated setup.
- Shoppers who want a straightforward, no-fuss preamp. There's one switch to set and nothing else to configure.
- Anyone stepping up from a receiver's basic phono input. Dedicated gain and RIAA correction outperform most built-in phono stages.
- Listeners with limited space near their turntable. Its compact size fits easily into a tight equipment shelf.
- Not the right fit for anyone who wants a USB or digital output. This is a purely analog design; NAD's separate PP 4 covers USB output instead.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run your turntable's phono cable into the PP 2e's RCA input, then connect its RCA output to a line-level input on your amplifier or receiver.
Flip the rear switch to MM or MC to match your cartridge type, then plug in the included power supply.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the NAD PP 2e:
- Turntables without a built-in phono stage
- Phono cartridges, MM or MC, matched to its selectable gain
- Interconnect cables to connect its output to your amp
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch between MM and MC cartridges?
Yes. A single rear switch selects between moving magnet and moving coil, each with its own gain and loading built in.
Does it have a USB output?
No. The PP 2e is a purely analog RCA-to-RCA design. NAD's separate PP 4 adds USB output for digitizing records.
How is this different from the older PP 2i?
The PP 2e is the current version in this line, having succeeded the earlier PP 2i. The PP 2i is no longer in production.
What's the warranty?
NAD covers the PP 2e for one year on user interfaces and two years on all other components, parts and labor, for the original purchaser.
