An Amplifier First, With Room to Become More
The Primare I25 is the base version of Sweden's modular integrated amplifier. No DAC, no network player, no digital inputs. What it does have is 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 200 watts into 4 ohms.
Power comes from Primare's own UFPD 2 Class D modules. Say your sources are already analog, or conversion happens in a separate box. This is the version that does not charge you for circuitry you will not use.
Five Analog Inputs and Somewhere to Grow
Five RCA stereo pairs handle sources. A line output feeds a recorder or a second zone. A preamp output lets a larger power amplifier take over later, with the I25 staying on as the control center.
Custom installation is covered too. The C25 remote comes in the box, and the back panel carries IR input and output on 3.5mm, a 12V trigger output, and an RS232 port for outboard system control.
Add the Modules Whenever You Want
The chassis is built to accept two option boards. One is the DM36 digital-to-analog module, the other the SM35 Prisma network player. Primare fits them at purchase or later. That is why the same box is sold as I25, I25 DAC, and I25 Prisma.
The case measures 430mm wide, 106mm tall, and 420mm deep, and weighs 11 kg. The front carries a single dial and a monochrome display, in the understated style Primare has used for years. This listing is the black finish.
Primare is distributed in North America by MoFi Distribution, and the amplifier carries a three-year limited warranty on parts and labor when it is bought from an authorized dealer. Audio Advisor is one, so your purchase qualifies. Keep your invoice.
What UFPD 2 Actually Changes
UFPD stands for Ultra Fast Power Device, and it is Primare's own design rather than a bought-in module. The second generation reworks the Class D output stage the company has used for years. The stated aim was linear amplification across the whole audible band.
The doubling into 4 ohms is the number to watch. An amplifier that goes from 100 watts to 200 watts as impedance halves is holding its composure where the load gets hard. That is where many designs run out of current.
Why Class D Makes This Box Possible
Class D is the reason 100 watts per channel fits a chassis this size without heat driving the design. That leaves interior room for the module bays, which is the whole point of the platform.
Primare builds the 25 series in Sweden and shares the same modular approach across the I35 integrated amplifier, the PRE35 preamplifier, and the CD35 disc player, so systems can be assembled from matching parts.
Who Is This Integrated Amplifier Best For?
- Your sources are analog — five RCA pairs, and no digital circuitry you are not going to use.
- You already own a DAC — keep conversion where it is and connect it to a line input.
- Your speakers dip in impedance — 100 watts into 8 ohms doubles to 200 watts into 4 ohms, so the amplifier keeps its grip where the load gets hard.
- You want the option later — the DM36 DAC and SM35 Prisma boards can be fitted after purchase.
- You want streaming and a DAC from the start — this version has neither, so a one-box system is better served by the I35 Prisma, which arrives with both modules fitted.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Speakers go to the binding posts. A CD player, streamer, or outboard DAC connects to any of the five RCA pairs, and a turntable needs a phono preamplifier in between. There is no digital input on this version.
If you later add a power amplifier, take the preamp output to it. The C25 remote, IR ports, 12V trigger, and RS232 handle the rest of a custom install.
Sources in, speakers out, nothing to configure.
Pairs Well With
Building around the I25? Start here:
- Bookshelf speakers — 100 watts suits a standmount in a real room: bookshelf speakers.
- Floorstanding speakers — the 4-ohm rating is what matters for towers: floorstanding speakers.
- DACs — this version expects conversion to happen elsewhere: digital-to-analog converters.
- Speaker cables — worth planning before the boxes land: speaker cables.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this version have a DAC or streaming?
This is the base I25, with analog inputs only. The I25 Prisma is the version that ships with the DM36 DAC module and the SM35 Prisma network player already fitted.
Can the modules be added later?
Yes. The chassis is designed for them, and Primare fits the DAC and Prisma boards either at purchase or afterwards. Your dealer arranges the installation.
How much power does it make?
100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 200 watts into 4 ohms, from Primare's UFPD 2 Class D modules.
How many inputs are there?
Five RCA stereo pairs, all line level. There is also a line output and a preamp output for adding a power amplifier later.
Can I connect a turntable?
Only through an external phono preamplifier. There is no phono stage built in, so the turntable feeds a phono stage first, then one of the line inputs.
How is it different from the I35?
The I35 makes 150 watts per channel and adds two balanced XLR inputs. Both share the same modular platform and the same option boards.
