A 1.3 Kilogram Acrylic Platter That Replaces the Metal One — and the Mat
The Pro-Ject Acryl it is sold each, one platter per turntable. It is not a mat: it is a replacement platter, 300 millimeters across and 20 millimeters thick, machined from acrylic with a satin surface. It fits the Debut, Debut Carbon and Xpression.
A metal platter rings, which is why it needs a felt mat to damp it — and the mat then sits between the record and the platter doing the damping. Acrylic does not ring in the same way, so the record goes straight onto the platter with nothing in between.
Acrylic Instead of Metal Plus Felt
Fit, Load and Materials
The platter weighs 1.3 kilograms, measures 300 millimeters across and stands 20 millimeters thick. Acrylic is close to vinyl in its acoustic behavior, which is the argument for putting the record directly on it.
Fitting is a swap, not a modification. Lift the stock metal platter off the sub-platter and set the Acryl it in its place. The felt mat comes out for good — the acrylic surface is what the record now rests on.
It fits the Pro-Ject Debut, Debut Carbon and Xpression, and those three only — the platters are cut to each family's sub-platter. For the Essential, Elemental and Primary, Pro-Ject builds the Acryl it E instead.
Who Is the Acryl it Best For?
- You own a Debut, Debut Carbon or Xpression — the three decks Pro-Ject builds this platter for
- Your metal platter rings when you tap it — acrylic does not, which is why the felt mat becomes unnecessary
- You want the record on the platter, not on a mat — nothing in between, and no static-attracting felt
- You want a job you can do in five minutes — lift the old platter off, set the new one on, done
- You own an Essential, Elemental or Primary — those take the Acryl it E instead, which is the version cut for them
How Do You Fit It?
Slip the belt off, lift the stock platter clear of the sub-platter and set it aside with its felt mat. Lower the Acryl it into place, refit the belt and check it runs true. Put the record straight onto the acrylic. Reset vertical tracking angle if the new platter sits at a different height.
Pairs Well With
What most Acryl it owners shop next.
- Record clamps and weights — an acrylic platter and a weight work on the same problem from opposite sides
- Turntable belts — worth replacing while the platter is off
- Cartridge alignment tools — a new platter changes record height, so geometry is worth re-checking
- Stylus force gauges — the other measurement to re-take afterwards
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. The platter is sold each and a turntable takes a single platter.
Which turntables does it fit?
The Pro-Ject Debut, Debut Carbon and Xpression. Essential, Elemental and Primary owners want the Acryl it E, which Pro-Ject cuts for those decks.
Do I still use a mat?
No mat is needed. Acrylic does not ring the way metal does, so the record goes directly onto the platter surface — that is the point of the change.
Will it change my tonearm setup?
It can. The platter is 20 millimeters thick and replaces a metal platter plus a felt mat, so the record may sit at a different height. Re-check vertical tracking angle once it is fitted.
